Daily update 10/9/24

FEMA in Spring Creek:
We will have a FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance team stationed here at the Spring Creek Community Center this Friday, October 11 from 9am-5pm to assist individuals with completion of assistance applications and provide answers to questions regarding FEMA assistance.
A DSA team will also be stationed in Hot Springs tomorrow, October 10 from 9am-5pm at the elementary school.

Community Meetings:
Up until now, we have been hosting a morning meeting in the gym at 9:30am for any interested community members to attend, listen to updates and information, and contribute to our relief efforts. Going forward, we will be meeting only on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning tomorrow, October 10. The donation site will still be open daily from 11am-5pm to receive donations or serve community members in need.
Ag Extension:
The Ag Extension in Marshall has set up a self-service site at the baseball fields for anybody to pick up fresh produce, night or day.
We are looking for volunteers with trucks to pick up produce and bring it back to the Community Center tomorrow before 5pm. They currently have an over-abundance of tomatoes, potatoes and onions.

Hot Meals:
Lunch and Dinner will be served at the Community Center every day courtesy of the World Central Kitchen. Join us between 12-2pm, and 5-7pm for some hot, DELICIOUS food!

Free Legal Aid:
Lawyers volunteering with the NC Bar Association are offering free legal aid for people affected by hurricane Helene. Lawyers can help with issues like FEMA submissions and appeals; disaster unemployment assistance; insurance claims; contractor disputes; replacement of wills and other legal documents lost in the disaster; mortgage foreclosure; and landlord/tenant issues.
Call the hotline at 1-866-219-5262.
The hotline is available 8:30 am – 1:30 pm Monday through Friday and 5:30 – 8:30 pm Monday and Thursday.
Collection Center Hours:
The collection center behind the Spring Creek Community Center will be open every day this week again. As we continue our cleanup efforts, be sure to dispose of your trash and recycling responsibly. Thank you to Don and Tommy for expanding the service hours last week and this week.
Prayer Circle Update:
As a correction to yesterday’s email, the prayer circle at the flagpole will not be formally hosted each morning. We will, however, be holding that space for anyone who wishes to gather informally, or form a group to meet as desired. A prayer circle was held this morning to thank the volunteers from the Southern Baptist Church in Kentucky, and to pray for the community.
Volunteer Sign-Up:
The only way we have been able to succeed at turning the community center into a temporary distribution center for donations, hot meals, relief application assistance, and health and wellness services is through the generosity and hard work of our many incredible volunteers. We have now created a sign-up schedule to ensure we are able to continue to keep the SCCC open for donations and aid, while also making sure volunteers have time to rest and take care of their own needs. The next time you are at the Community Center and you have the capacity, please sign up for a few shift to assist with any of the following:
  • Receiving, sorting, and/or distributing donations (10am-12pm; 12-3pm; 3-5:30pm)
  • Dinner clean-up (6:30-7:30pm)
We may also have some ad-hoc cleaning needs to fill in gaps. Volunteers to help split or deliver firewood will be managed separately.
